  • If you are not a native San Antonian it may take a couple of years before you realize that, in general, the further south and west you travel in the city the less expensive and (dare I say it) more exemplary the Tex-Mex food. There are no shortage of one room, exterior pastel color painted, mariachi, matador or conjunto band postered, mom and pop cocinas mexicanas (mexican kitchens) around baja San Antonio town. Whatever stigma you think there may be about frequenting these little "hole in the wall" joints, forget 'em. I have been to quite a few over the years and have found most places to be welcoming, friendly and ready to bridge any language gap should your Spanish be a little too rusty or their English still a work in progress. Based on an informed suggestion we gassed up the beast and hit the road for a 20 mile excursion over to Loop 13, a partial trans-corridor highway in south San Antonio that helped folks get from one side of the city to the other before Loop 410 came into being. We saw the faded yellow building come into view just as our eloquent navigation voice announced "you have arrived at your destination". So many of these little boites plaster the entrance wall with their full menu so there is no question about what they serve and for what price. It's a boon to curbside service as well these days. Running towards the witching hour of most taquerias, Angelicas #2 was still busy as we took an anywhere seat. Chips and salsa Bean and Cheese Nachos A $6.89 lunch special that would tickle Scrooge pink and give Adam Richman pause Our little table was a jumble of some mighty good eats with the cheesy nacho plate and the lunch specials containing two cheese enchiladas with meat gravy (oh so reminiscent of wonderful grade school Wednesdays), two beef puffy tacos that were very good even after getting droopy drawers from resting in the enchilada gravy that split them open when lifted, rice, beans and a small guacamole salad to gild your puffies or do with as you like. Both the flour and corn tortillas were freshly made and served hot. And you know what that means. Irresistible would be the catch word here and ineffable its companion descriptor of these better than good, food scoop assisting, delectable front end loaders. Although the 40 mile round trip may be a bridge too far for frequent patronage, I'm of the opinion that if I were to consider the cost of gas in addition to the cost of food for eating afar as opposed to closer to home, the advantage would either be an equivalent proposition or one that might just weigh in favor of mom and pop. Regardless, be bold in your dining experiences and approach them with measured abandon. Or, should you like the more ominous bible conflation: "eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die."

  • Place was super busy. I had a hard time finding parking (approx 15-18 spots) So I took this as a good sign as the food must be good. I ordered food inside. There was very little wait. I used the restrooms to wash up after I ordered. By the time I came out my food was ready. Very fast service And my suspicions were confirmed. The food was great. Cashier was polite and friendly with an infectious smile. I will definitely visit again when I'm in San Antonio

  • I went in and placed a to go order and it was so fast! The plates were full and the food was great. We got the Tejano plate and the carne guisada was tender and flavorful.

  • Very good food and top of the line service. It's small inside, but great food at heart.

  • Small restaurant with limited seating. But worth the wait. Menudo is with pig feet. I prefer beef, but it was still excellent with the home made flour tortillas!
